How To Clean a Mattress The Right Way
We’ve prepared a step-by-step guide on how to deep clean your mattress. Don’t worry it really isn’t too tedious of a task, and it’s very much worth it in order to preserve your mattress, as well as help prevent pest and bacteria build-up. While the old procedure would be to flip it over every two years, most modern mattresses have a pillow-top variety and can’t be flipped as they have a proper bottom and top. So, the new rule of thumb is to deep clean your mattress at least two times a year, as well as to rotate it. Here is what you need to do:

#Remove and Wash Bedding
The first step in cleaning is to strip the bed down. Take off all the bedding. Strip the sheets, pillowcases, and the mattress covers. Then toss them for a good wash in the washing machine, while you go and work on the mattress. You can also run the pillows and duvet through a cycle if their label allows it (some may need to be hand-washed).

#Get The Supplies
Now that you’ve tossed everything in the washer, it’s time to grab all the cleaning supplies you’ll need to tackle the mattress. Most can be found in your pantry, however, depending on the mattress, you may need tougher spot treatments. Here are some things you’ll most likely need:
- Vacuum (with an upholstery attachment if possible)
- Spot cleaner/enzyme cleaner or dish soap
- Laundry Detergent
- Cloths
- Basin
- Cold water
- Baking soda
- Steamer or Iron
- Lavender essential oil
Optional:
- 3% hydrogen peroxide
- White vinegar
- Fan

#Vacuum Well
Before you get into the nitty-gritty of the mattress, it’s best to vacuum all the dust away first. So, take your trusted vacuum and go wild. Vacuum the top of the mattress, the sides, the corners of the bed, behind the backboard, underneath it, and pretty much anywhere you can reach. It’s important to be as thorough as possible since any left dust will just rise up when you start cleaning or just using the bed once again. You can also use a steamer or an iron (just make sure they don’t drip) to kill off any dust mites lurking near the surface.

#Treat The Stains
Okay, how you are going to go about treating stains depends a lot on what they are from. Stains happen, but it’s best to not leave them on your mattress. In general, it’s not okay to soak your mattress or apply cleaning solution or water directly, especially when it comes to memory foam. So, what we will do is operate with caution and spot-clean with a stain remover. Choose your remover based on the stain. For biological stains (which are the most common), choose an enzyme cleaner (or make your own by mixing dish soap and water or cold water and hydrogen peroxide). Then just spray some of the stain remover onto a cloth and blot the problem area. To another cloth apply cold water and continue to blot the cloth until the stain is gone! Make sure to remove all traces of the cleaner by blotting it with the water. Then let your mattress dry before moving on.

#Baking Soda
Mattresses start to smell a bit funky after a while. This is, of course, completely normal, but who doesn’t prefer a nice-smelling mattress to lie on? All you need to do is take a cup of baking soda and mix it with some drops of lavender oil (which helps you relax and sleep better). Then put the mixture in a strainer and shake the soda evenly over the whole mattress. Open the windows to let in some UV rays to help you kill any bacteria or mold, as well. Leave the soda on for as long as possible, preferably at least for the time it would take your bedding to wash and dry. Then just vacuum every last bit of baking soda off the mattress. The soda will have gotten any bad smells out, while the lavender will have infused the mattress with its lovely smell.

#Mattress Protector
Okay, so your mattress is sparkling clean. The best thing you can do to save yourself the trouble of cleaning next time (or at least deep cleaning, we still recommend you clean your mattress two times a year) is to get yourself a mattress protector. This will protect your precious mattress from any direct spills, stains, dirt, dust, and other types of unpleasantries. And it’s much easier to just toss the protector into the washer and not worry about treating the mattress itself for stains. Another thing you can do is to use fitted sheets above the protector. This will keep dust out. Wrapping up the mattress nice and tight will ensure dust mites take up no residence there. This is especially important if you struggle with asthma or allergies.

#New Bedding
Now the mattress is squeaky clean, and you’ve put on your protector and some fitted sheets, it’s time to put on some fresh bedding. There is nothing more satisfying than laying in a clean bed. Make your bed neatly and enjoy knowing you’ll be sleeping in a fresh bed with fresh sheets.
