Your staircase might be one of the first things people notice when they enter your house
What are the different types of stairs?
There are a few different types of stars. Today we are going to talk about the most popular ones – straight, u-shaped, l-shaped, curved, winder and spiral. These are the six different staircase types, which can be found in houses most often.
Straight staircase
Do we really need to explain it. It is all in the name. The straight staircase is a single linear flight, which doesn’t change its direction. Usually, these types of staircases can be found in old houses. The good thing about them is that they are very versatile when it comes to design. For example, in older houses they are usually made of wood. Nowadays, you can see straight metal stairs in some industrial, modern homes.
This is probably the second most popular type of staircase
Other popular types of stairs include the L-shaped staircase
L-shaped staircase is one, which makes a 90 degree turn at some point after a landing. It doesn’t really matter whether the turn is to the left or to the right. Once again, it is all in the name. If your staircase forms the letter L, then it is L-shaped. These stairs can also be called quarter turn stairs. They are usually found in larger houses with a lot of hallway space.
Next up, U-shaped staircase
U-shaped stairs
U-shaped stairs, also known as half turn stairs, are ones where the bend is taken further to form a U-shape. There is a landing which separates the two flights and usually the two staircases lead in opposite directions. This type of staircase is very popular in modern architecture. They are especially modern in open floor plan houses where you can see the full effect of the staircase. Furthermore, they also allow for a lot of freedom of design. They can be made of wood, or metal with intricate railings made of metal or even glass.
Everyone has probably seen these types of stairs somewhere
Winder stairs
These stairs are usually used in smaller spaces which don’t allow for big landings between the staircases. Similar to the L-shaped stairs, the winder serves as a landing which is wider on one side than the other. Once again these can be found more often in older houses.
Now a little something for the more extravagant people out there
Fun types of stairs – the spiral staircase
Having a spiral staircase is a lot of fun and it can definitely serve as a focal point in your home. However, they may not be such a good idea if you go out clubbing very often. The design of this staircase revolves around a single pole, so if you look at them from above the stairs form a perfect circle around it. These staircases are used in open floor plan spaces, which don’t have enough room for a full staircase. Or, in other cases, the homeowner might like to think outside the box and has chosen a bit more extravagant staircase design. They are most often made of metal with a metal railing. The railing in this case is of extreme importance. Especially, if you are clumsy.
The most elegant staircase – curved
Curved staircase
Unlilke the L-shaped stairs, the curved ones have no landings. Instead of making a 90 degree angle they are slightly curved to accommodate the space and the natural flow of the walls. Hence, the name. Curved staircases are very elegant and classy and can definitely be found in large mansions and houses with very high ceilings. Most of their magic works best in more open hallways with more space.
