The 2010 World Expo which is to be held in Shanghai, China on May 1, 2010 will be the largest World Expo in the history ever since it began in 1851. This year UK want to make quite an impression and have hired Heatherwick studio for the job.

“The Seed Cathedral” features 60,000 fiber-optic rods which pierce through the six-level structure. Each rod contains seeds from the Millennium Seed Bank in Great Britain.

With this Seed taking center stage at the UK Pavilion, it intends to express British creativity and environmental engagement at the event. The Seed in itself is a huge structure as it is 20 meters tall and it is formed from 60,000 transparent fiber optic rods.

During the day, the rods act as optic fibers and daylight shine trough  inwards to illuminate the interior. At night, light sources inside each rod allow the whole structure to glow both inside and out.
