When is Easter 2021?
This year Easter is going to be on Sunday, April 4th. Each year, the holiday is on a different day somewhere between March 22nd and April 25th. It is celebrated one week after March’s full moon, which is March 28th this year. This full moon is also the first full moon after the spring equinox, which is why the holiday is very closely related to the celebration of spring and is also known as Paschal Full Moon. The Eastern Orthodox Church, on the other hand, is going to celebrate the holiday on May 2nd. That is because it follows the Julian calendar rather than the Gregorian, which means that their observance of Easter occurs anywhere between April 4th and May 8th. Once again, it is also different every year.

What is Easter and why is it celebrated?
Easter is a Christian holiday, which celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ. According to the Bible, the resurrection occured three days after Christ was crucified. Easter is also the day which concludes a series of events, known as “Passion of the Christ”. These events include 40 days of fasting an praying and the “Holy Week”. The “Holy Week”, on the other hand, consists of Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Sunday. Holy Thursday is the day in which Jesus had his last supper with his 12 apostles. On Good Friday the crucifixion was observed, which, in turn, led to his resurrection on Easter Sunday. It is believed that the word “Easter” comes from Eostre, the Anglo-Saxon goddess of fertility and spring.

There are a few traditions, which are closely associated with Easter. These traditions can be observed all over the world. Easter coloring pages with eggs are so popular
Dyeing eggs is probably the most popular Easter tradition. The legend says that Mary Magdalene brought a basket full of eggs to Jesus’ crucifixion. A few drops of blood fell on the eggs, dyeing them red, hence where the egg dye comes from. Outside of the legend, it is believed that eggs represent rebirth and life. Which is exactly why they are associated with the holiday as well as spring time. Nowadays, people have come up with so many different ways to dye eggs, it is absolutely unbelievable. You can find so many different colors and patterns out there.

The legend of the Easter bunny
The reason we have so many Easter coloring pages with bunnies is because the Easter bunny is somewhat of a mascot for the holiday. Rabbits are known for their big litters and their fertility. It was believed that Easter bunnies layed eggs and then they decorated them. Once again, a tradition symbolizing birth and new life, bunnies are a must have decoration for your Easter decor. This, however is another pagan tradition associated with the goddess of fertility – Eostre.

Easter baskets
As we already shared with you, it was believed that Easter bunnies layed eggs and then decorated them. So, legend has it, that in order to get some decorated eggs, children would decorate baskets, reminiscent of nests and leave them outside for the Easter bunnies. Then, they would go and collect their gorgeously colorful, patterned eggs. Once again, this was a pagan tradition which made its way into modern day traditions.

Egg hunt
Another pagan tradition closely associated with Easter. The egg hunt is also tightly connected to the Easter bunny. Apart from laying eggs and decorating them, it was also believed that Easter bunnies hid their eggs. Which, in turn, led to the modern day tradition of organising an egg hunt. Plus, this is such a fun activity, which gets the whole family involved.
