How To Get Rid of Mosquito Bites

Thanks to the saliva that these little flying pests introduce to your wound while they feed on you, the bite itches terribly. And since it itches we tend to unconsciously scratch it more and more. Making the bite bigger, redder and more irritated. This only makes the healing time even longer and doesn’t really help with the itchy feeling. So, what can you do in order to get rid of that mosquito bite as quick as possible. Here are some ideas.

Since it itches we tend to unconsciously scratch it more and more

Rubbing Alcohol

The alcohol manages to denature any leftover saliva proteins. This means that it clears the wound and removing the “thing” that your immune system is reacting to. Consequently, the symptoms die down. It’s also great for disinfecting the bite, and it has a cooling and soothing effect.

Cold Press

Use a cold press. It can be from ice or anything generally cold. The temperature change will help the swelling go down. It also helps provide a temporary relief from the itchy feeling. However, this is not a long term solution, as it does not remove the mosquito saliva. So, once you remove the pack, it may start to annoy you again. But it is a fast relief.

Aloe Vera

What isn’t aloe vera good for? This little plant is famous for it’s soothing properties. So, take some aloe vera gel or pure aloe vera to the bite. It will help soothe the skin that’s irritated thanks to its anti-inflammatory properties. Not only that but it will also help get rid of some redness. Aloe Vera does need some days to help the itching subside, but your skin will enjoy all of it’s hydrating benefits.

Oatmeal

Oatmeal isn’t only for eating. It’s also great for handling razor bumps and mosquito bites. Oatmeal has special compounds that can help relieve swelling and itching. All you need to do is make a paste from it. To do so you will need to mix equal parts oatmeal and water. Spoon some of the paste in a wash cloth and hold it on the bite for around ten minutes. You can also do an oatmeal bath. Sprinkle a cup of oats or oatmeal in a tub full of warm water. Soak for twenty minutes.

Baking Soda

Baking soda is great for many things – cleaning, cooking, and mosquito bites. Just like with the oatmeal, you can form a baking soda paste that can help with the itching and tame the inflammation. All you need to do is mix a tablespoon of soda with some water. It should make a paste like consistency. Just put some of the paste to the bite, wait around ten minutes and wash it off.

Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar has been used a natural remedy for centuries. Dab some vinegar on your mosquito bite. It will help get rid of the burning and stinging symptoms. Vinegar is also a natural disinfectant, so if you’ve been scratching the bite a bit too much it will help cleanse the wound. You can also soak a washcloth with vinegar and cold water to apply as a compress.

Cream

If you don’t want to do any home remedies, you can also go for an over-the-counter cream or gel. There are plenty on the market to try out. Search for hydrocortisone creams or calamine lotions. In general something with an antihistamine response will do the job.
