First off, before we share our DIY face mask recipes, it is important to determine your hair type first. Is your hair dry, oily or normal?
- Oily hair. It is easy to recognise if your hair is oily. If it looks greasy just two days after you have washed it, then, yes, you have oily hair. Usually people with oily skin, also have oily hair. One way to keep the greasiness at bay is to wash your hair at least 2 times a week. What’s more, you need to wash it with room temperature water, because hot water stimulates oil production. Third tip to keep in mind is to avoid using conditioner and oils on your roots.
- Dry hair. It is usually recognized by its split ends, easy breakage and hair loss. If that is the case with your hair, the most important thing you need to so is use deep conditioning or even leave in treatments which are going to moisturize your hair. Avoid using dry shampoos and heat tools as they will dry your hair out further.
- Normal hair. Well, if you are one of the lucky ones, congratulations. Normal hair lacks dandruff and usually has a healthy look. That, however doesn’t mean that it doesn’t need taking care of.
Even if you have normal hair you should still use conditioner and treatments to keep it healthy
How do I know my hair type?
There are a few more characterizations when it comes to hair.
- Hair texture: straight, wavy, curly and coily. To find out what your texture is let you hair air dry. Then, if it dries fully straight, it is straight. If it has a slight S shape, then it is wavy. If it dries with a defined curly pattern, then it is curly. Finally, if it has tight curls or spirals, it is coily.
- Hair structure: fine, medium and coarse. Cut a piece of sewing thread and take a single strand of your hair and place them next to each other. If your hair is thinner than the strand, then it is fine. If it is thicker, your hair is course. Everything in between is considered medium.
- Hair porosity: high or low. To determine whether your hair absorbs moisture easily or not, take a single strand of it and place it in a bowl full of water. If it sinks to the bottom, then it has high porosity, meaning it absorbs the moisture easily. If it floats at the top, that means it has low porosity – doesn’t absorb moisture easily.
