Dishwashers, like many other household appliances can clog up a bunch of yucky stuff inside of them. Which consequently will lead to horrid smells, mold, residue, and dishes coming out dirtier than they were when you put them in. But those aren’t the only problems that can arise. A dirty dishwasher will start performing worse and worse. So, what to do? A good ‘ol deep clean can help solve all of your problems. Here is how to clean a dishwasher properly in just five easy steps.

How To Clean a Dishwasher

Whether you’re doing some spring-cleaning, or you’ve just decided to tackle the heavy appliances like your washing machine and dishwasher, it’s important to know the right steps. That’s why we’ve put together this guide. It will help make the process go by faster and be more efficient. So, here is what you need to do.

It’s time to clean the dishwasher

#Step 1: Remove everything

In order to reach everything you need to clean, you will first need to get rid of all the utensil holders, racks, and even the filter. Most filters easily twist off, but keep in mind that for some, you may need tools. Take everything out and place it is a bowl or basin filled with warm water and a cup of white vinegar. Let them soak for around half an hour, while you continue with the rest. You can also just rinse everything with some warm, soapy water and scrub the dirt off.

#Step 2: Debris cleaning

Now it’s time’s to get dirty. Check if there is any debris lying around the washer and wipe it away. Make sure to spray and wipe down the side walls, the corners, and the top and bottom. Use some soapy water and a scrub brush or a cloth.

#Step 3: Drain

While the filter is soaking in the vinegar or soapy water, it’s time to clean the drain. Remove any food and debris that had built up. Then take a sponge or cloth and with some vinegar or soap water and clean the drain well. After you rinse it well, you can put back in the filter. Put back all the racks in as well.

#Step 4: Vinegar and Baking Soda Cycle

Okay, now it’s time to run some cycles. In order to really give your dishwasher a really deep, good wash, it’s best to run two cycles. One with vinegar and then one with baking soda. Place a bowl filled with vinegar and run your dishwasher on a normal cycle. After the cycle is finished, pour a cup of baking soda onto the bottom of the washer and let it run another cycle.

#Step 5: Outside

Now that it’s all nice and clean on the inside, it’s time to clean the outside. You don’t really need to do anything too wild here. If you have a stainless steel appliance, just use a steel cleaner and then wipe it down with a microfiber cloth. For other surfaces such as plastic or glass, just use a drop of detergent and a damp cloth. For the glass we recommend a glass cleaner and a microfiber cloth.

How Often Should You Clean Your Dishwasher?

How often you should use your dishwasher depends on how often you use it. However, a good general rule to follow is to give it a impressive, deep clean every two to four months. But if you can’t live without your dishwasher and use it daily, make sure to deep clean it once a month. On the daily it’s a good idea to get rid of any visible food bits and to weekly wipe down the door edges, to clean the filter and get rid of any debris.

Clean it between two and four months or once a month
